The British coastline is a dramatic frontier, constantly reshaped by the unrelenting power of the Atlantic and the North Sea. However, the greatest threat to our shores today is not just the water itself, but a phenomenon known as “Concrete Hunger.” During the mid-20th-century, the UK embarked on an ambitious era of coastal architecture, building massive sea walls, promenades, and “hard” defenses to protect seaside towns. Ironically, we are now discovering that these very structures are accelerating the erosion they were meant to prevent, “eating” away at the natural beaches and ecosystems that once provided a flexible defense.
The science behind concrete hunger is rooted in a process called “scouring.” When a wave hits a natural, sandy beach, its energy is dissipated and absorbed by the shifting grains. However, when a wave hits a vertical 20th-century sea wall, the energy is reflected downward with immense force. This redirected energy “scours” the sand away from the base of the wall, lowering the beach level and exposing the foundations of the architecture. Over time, the beach disappears entirely, leaving the sea wall vulnerable to collapse. In the UK, many iconic coastal resorts are finding their once-golden sands replaced by treacherous mudflats or bare rock.
Furthermore, these hard defenses interrupt the “longshore drift”—the natural movement of sediment along the coastline. By trapping sand in one location to protect a specific pier or promenade, engineers inadvertently starve the “down-drift” areas of the material they need to stay stable. This creates a domino effect of eroding cliffs and vanishing dunes. The 20th-century mindset was one of “man vs. nature,” but modern UK coastal management is realizing that nature usually wins. The hunger for concrete has left us with a crumbling infrastructure that is increasingly expensive to maintain and ecologically devastating.
